Bradley Rust A bright and warm / inviting production is one of the first things you notice on this album, secondly the refreshing accent which gives the sound real character. Too often this sound has an overly American vocal delivery which can be great, but we've heard it all before. Whilst there is no shortage of potential 'singles' on offer, this is an album worth listening to in full. Very quick to grow on you too. Feet will be tapping. Favorite track: DREAMS SPEED AWAY.
Bree Morcroft
Bree Morcroft thumbnail
Bree Morcroft A bright pop-rock discovery. With this album I'm hearing hints of bands like Constantines, The Thermals and The Hold Steady come through in the sound which is well crafted both musically and lyrically. Obviously plenty of time has been spent getting these songs just right before recording. Hooks in all the right places and enough variety to maintain your interest right through the album with no urge to hit the skip button. 'If I Should' & 'Kicks' would not be out of place at all on radio. Favorite track: TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER.

about

"Kicks" is the debut pop/rock music project of Irishman Col Patterson.

Frank Hughes of GoldenPlec.com said of Kicks:

"Over the course of ten songs, The Vinylheads take elements of Brit pop circa The Boo Radleys mixed with the Americana tinged rock sensibilities of The Hold Steady. The melding of both styles from opposite sides of the Atlantic is largely successful.

At times, it’s perky and bouncing like a kid on a sugar rush on If I Should and Dream Speed Away before changing gears to more anthemic, atmospheric tunes like To Kill A Giant."

Colm O'Hare of Hotpress Said:

"Strong Debut By Irish Outfit-"Kicks" -Patterson's commanding voice comes across as a blend of Paul Weller and Psychedelic Furs' Richard Butler...the energy of Punk and classic Rock, all imbued with a distinctly Irish Flavour...it all adds up to an impressive debut by any measure"

Emily Belton-Pure M Magazine said:

"Kicks is full to the brim with pop rock basslines and guitar riffs. This is a substantial album that flows smartly along. Col Patterson’s distinctive, warm voice cements the passion in this album."

In December 2014, the title single, “Kicks” was chosen by BBC 6music for airplay by Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and was Legend Tom Robinson’s Recommends “Pick of the Week”.

Danny Gandolfi from Musicnews.com described another single "Pear" as…
.."a catchy pop song, with great jangly melodic guitar and neat, clever chord changes (reminding me of ‘The Undertones’), slowly building up, veering towards a rousing chorus and uplifting close."

Col hopes to play tracks from the album live and release his second album in 2016.

“Kicks”, Recorded by Martin Quinn of JAM Studios Ireland, is out Sep 1st 2015 on all digital platforms.
